Like most parents of teenagers, you\u2019re probably a bit anxious about the thought of your child learning how to drive. That\u2019s why the team at Certified Auto Repair would like to offer a bit of information to help you understand what you can expect from driving lessons and the like.<\/p>\n
In most of Canada, the minimum age to start learning how to drive is 16 (Alberta is a notable exception, as the province allows teens to apply for a learner\u2019s permit at 14).<\/p>\n
Getting a driver\u2019s license doesn\u2019t happen overnight! There are several steps involved depending on your province, such as:<\/p>\n
– Attending driving lessons<\/p>\n
– Filling out a medical questionnaire<\/p>\n
– Passing a visual acuity test<\/p>\n
– Passing various practical and theoretical exams<\/p>\n
– Obtaining a learner\u2019s permit<\/p>\n
– Obtaining a graduated driver\u2019s license<\/p>\n
In most provinces, learner\u2019s permits are awarded to people who have successfully completed the first phase of driving lessons and exams. It typically allows new drivers to get behind the wheel when accompanied by a more experienced adult; various other possible restrictions may apply depending on your province. In most cases, learner\u2019s permits are valid for 12 months before the permit-holder can move onto the next step, the graduated (or probationary) driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n
In provinces with a graduated licensing system in place, new drivers must first drive for a year with their learner\u2019s permit before becoming eligible for a graduated driver\u2019s license. This is the final step before the real, full-fledged license. The graduated driver\u2019s license (also called \u201cprobationary license\u201d in some provinces) typically involves fewer restrictions than the learner\u2019s permit (it typically gives the right to drive alone), but more than the full license.<\/p>\n
