6 things to check before hitting the road this winter
Do you need to drive on a cold winter’s day (or night)? It’s no secret that the cold season comes with its share of driving challenges. Fortunately, the team at Certified Auto Repair has put together this handy checklist to help you get behind the wheel with confidence.
- Wheels. First things first, check your tire pressure and adjust it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Incorrectly inflated tires can increase your fuel consumption and stopping distance.
Also, make sure you remove frozen slush from your wheel wells. Built-up ice can make it hard to manoeuvre and cause premature wear and tear on your tires. Moreover, if a piece of icy slush comes loose, it could damage the car behind you.
- External sensors. If your vehicle is fitted with driver-assistance sensors, make sure nothing is obstructing them.
- Backup camera. If you need to reverse while out and about, you don’t want to wait and find out your backup camera is dirty or covered in snow at the last minute, rendering it useless.
- Licence plate. Unfortunately, many people still forget to brush off their licence plates when clearing snow off their cars and hitting the road. According to the Highway Safety Code, your licence plate must always be legible, or you could be fined.
- Windshield washer fluid. Have you ever run out of windshield washer fluid while driving at night without an exit in sight? Save yourself the stress by keeping your car’s windshield washer fluid topped up and carrying an extra jug in the trunk.
- Emergency kit. Make sure you have all the necessary tools and equipment you need in case you break down or get stuck. This includes jumper cables, skid plates, a shovel and something to give you traction, like cat litter.
If you changed your vehicle’s tires and oil yourself this fall, having a professional conduct a pre-winter inspection is a must. The technician will check all your vehicle’s parts and systems, including the brakes, heating system, exhaust, transmission and battery. They’ll also go ahead and fix any minor issues before they escalate.
