How to handle being in a traffic jam

Imagine this: you’re driving home from work when traffic suddenly comes to a standstill. You look ahead and see miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic on the horizon. Whether you’re all too familiar with this situation or not, the Certified Auto Repair team has prepared a few tips to help you confidently cruise through heavy traffic.

Stay alert

Although it may feel like the vehicles ahead of you aren’t moving, don’t take that as your cue to close your eyes and take a nap. Stay aware of what’s going on around you. For example, look in your mirrors, check your blind spots and avoid distractions. In Quebec, it’s against the law to text or play games on your phone while in traffic.

Conserve fuel

Unfortunately, running out of gas while stuck in traffic isn’t uncommon. Only use the heater or air conditioner when necessary to prevent your tank from running low.

Keep boredom at bay

If you’re alone, listen to the radio or a playlist of your favourite songs at a reasonable volume. You can also play observation or guessing games with your passengers.

Be respectful

Avoid tailgating the vehicle in front of you. You should also refrain from constantly changing lanes to try and get ahead faster. These behaviours aren’t only dangerous but also very annoying to other motorists.

Prevent aches and pains

Sitting in traffic can cause stiffness and pain in your body. Reduce tension by resting your thumbs on the steering wheel instead of gripping it with both hands. Also, remember to lean back and keep your shoulders well supported on the backrest. When you come to a complete stop, do a few exercises like tilting your head from left to right, rotating your arms and contracting your abdominal muscles.

Be optimistic

Keeping a smile on your face while stuck in traffic is easier said than done. However, remember the situation is temporary, and there’s no point in getting impatient with other drivers or honking your horn to show your displeasure.

Few things are more frustrating than breaking down while in a traffic jam. For peace of mind, make an appointment at your nearest repair shop for preventative maintenance.
