How old do you have to be to get a driver’s license?
In most of Canada, the minimum age to start learning how to drive is 16 (Alberta is a notable exception, as the province allows teens to apply for a learner’s permit at 14).
What are the steps involved in earning a driver’s license?
Getting a driver’s license doesn’t happen overnight! There are several steps involved depending on your province, such as:
– Attending driving lessons
– Filling out a medical questionnaire
– Passing a visual acuity test
– Passing various practical and theoretical exams
– Obtaining a learner’s permit
– Obtaining a graduated driver’s license
What is a learner’s permit?
In most provinces, learner’s permits are awarded to people who have successfully completed the first phase of driving lessons and exams. It typically allows new drivers to get behind the wheel when accompanied by a more experienced adult; various other possible restrictions may apply depending on your province. In most cases, learner’s permits are valid for 12 months before the permit-holder can move onto the next step, the graduated (or probationary) driver’s license.
What is a graduated driver’s license?
In provinces with a graduated licensing system in place, new drivers must first drive for a year with their learner’s permit before becoming eligible for a graduated driver’s license. This is the final step before the real, full-fledged license. The graduated driver’s license (also called “probationary license” in some provinces) typically involves fewer restrictions than the learner’s permit (it typically gives the right to drive alone), but more than the full license.

Most provinces prohibit young drivers with their learner’s permit or graduated license from consuming any amount of alcohol before getting behind the wheel—even if their blood alcohol content is below the legal limit of 0.08%. Breaking these zero-tolerance laws usually comes with a hefty fine and other undesirable penalties. Your teen’s best bet is to stay away from the driver’s seat after drinking even a sip of alcohol.
What vehicles can you drive with a full license?
A standard driver’s license typically gives the right to drive the following types of vehicle (this list varies from province to province, so always double-check with your local authorities):
– A regular car
– A scooter
– A tractor
– A three-wheeled vehicle (such as a T-Rex or a Slingshot)
– A service vehicle (supply, repair or towing)
– A recreational vehicle
– A tool vehicle (designed to perform a specific task)
